The Long Term Participant and Athlete Development Model:

  • is based on the sport participant’s developmental age and not their chronological age recognizing that children are not miniature adults and do not all develop at the same speed

  • acknowledges everyone progresses through the stages of development and training objectives at their own rhythm

  • is athlete centered, coach driven and supported by administrators, officials and financial partners

  • is based on the Canadian Sport for Life model, a multi-sport model developed for all Canadians in all sports, www.ltad.ca

  • is intended to assist athletes, parents, coaches, officials and sport administrators to make informed decisions about athlete development

  • allows for everyone to participate to the full extent of their abilities

  • recognizes competitions must be adapted to the stage of development of the participants

Speed Skating Canada’s Long Term Participant and Athlete Development Model (LTPAD) is Speed Skating Canada’s commitment to ensure that every participant has the best learning environment possible at every stage of development to achieve their full potential in speed skating.  The LTPAD Model defines the best learning participation environment at each stage of development by taking into account physical, mental, cognitive and emotional factors.

The Find Your Edge overview document provides a general overview of Speed Skating Canada’s Long Term Participant and Athlete Development model. It identifies the key stages of development as well the ten (10) key factors influencing athlete development. It is general in nature and outlines general training and competition objectives based on the developmental age of participants as well as explaining the basics of how to determine an individual’s developmental age.

A Parent’s Guide to Speed Skating is targeted towards parents who are relatively new to the sport of speed skating. It provides general information about the sport of speed skating including competitions, safety equipment required and the type of training that young participants should be doing.

Speed Skating Canada, as well as the Canadian Sport for Life working group have already developed some key resources to assist in the understanding of long term athlete development philosophy and how it can be used to have improved sporting experience.  To access these resources, please consult the resources page within the athlete development section of our website.
