Peter Williamson Trust Fund Bursary

In 1992, the Board of Directors of Speed Skating Canada unanimously endorsed the establishment of a trust fund in memory of Peter Williamson.  Peter was an Olympian skater, excellent coach and Technical Director of SSC. He was very much aware of the importance of a good education and was of the opinion that sport and education, in varying forms, could be combined; that the two could truly stimulate each other.
The trust fund offers four (4) annual bursaries of approximately $750.00 each to deserving and promising skaters, the amount to be reviewed periodically:

  • Two (2) bursaries are available for one female and one male athlete on the National or Development Team in Short Track Speed Skating; and
  • Two bursaries are available for one female and one male athlete on the National or Development Team in Long Track Speed Skating.

Who is eligible to receive a bursary

The bursaries shall be made available to athletes who:

  1. Best combine athletic and scholastic achievement;
  2. Have the ability to communicate well with coaches and fellow skaters; and,
  3. Show elements of leadership and are positive role models for other athletes.

An applicant must:

  1. Be registered as a member of Speed Skating Canada;
  2. Complete the application form;
  3. Indicate the intention to enroll in a post-secondary educational institution for the year or semester going forward and provide a proof of that intent from that institution; and,
  4. Submit all documentation prior to the deadline of April 16th, 2007 to the office of Speed Skating Canada.

The application will be considered by the Selection Committee when all information is complete and submitted on time.

General information

  1. The Board of Directors of Speed Skating Canada has the right to modify the terms of the distribution of the bursaries if it becomes necessary to do so.  Such modifications shall conform as closely as possible to the expressed intention of the donors in establishing the bursaries.
  2. In order to accommodate student athletes who are trying to qualify for an Olympic team in the given year, the Selection Committee has the right to adjust the enrollment deadline.
  3. If in any year, in the judgment of the Selection Committee, there is no candidate of sufficient merit to warrant receipt of the bursary, the monies available for the bursary will be carried over to the following year and allocated at the discretion of the committee.
  4. If in the discretion of the Selection Committee it seems desirable, in any year to make more than four awards, the amount of money available may be divided between or among qualified candidates.

Selection process

The candidates for the bursaries will be ranked by the Selection Committee based on the above criteria submitted from the current year's experience as noted on the application form.  Only the names of the successful candidates plus an alternate will be submitted to the Board of Directors for approval.

Selection committee

  1. Mrs. Lori Derraugh, representing the donors;
  2. A member of the National or Development Coaching Staff in long track and short track;
  3. A skater representative of the Long-track National or Development Team and a representative of the Short-track National or Development Team;
  4. One representative of the branches of Speed Skating Canada; and,
  5. The President of Speed Skating Canada or designate.

The names of the successful candidates will be announced at SSC Annual General Meeting.
