The coaches, athletes, sport scientists, administrators, officials and policy makers closest to skater development are constantly seeking ways to improve and refine it skater development programs.
We never assume that our long term participant and athlete development model in its current form is ever complete or final. We operate from the position that it represents the best practices in coaching and athlete development as they are understood today. The development of our model began in 2003 and has already undergone many revisions as we have implemented program changes and gained a greater understanding of our sport. It has been expanded to look at program delivery, aligned with the Canadian Sport for Live Movement by adding considerations for the Active Start and Active for Life stages of development and provoked a comprehensive review of our Competition and Events System resulting in the recommendations published in Racing on Skates. As the recommendations are implemented, improvements and refinements are ongoing as we increase our knowledge and understanding and share good practices.
The concept of continuous improvement, which permeates the Canadian Sport for Life movement and Speed Skating Canada's Long Term Participant and Athlete Development model is drawn from the respected Japanese industrial philosophy known as Kaizen. By applying a willingness to always seek improvements in our understanding and practice, our model will continuously evolve to accommodate new breakthroughs in sport science research, new innovations in technology, and evolving best practices in coaching.
By focusing on continuous improvement, we will also ensure that our practices reflects all emerging facets of physical activity, sport, recreation and education to ensure that it is inclusive of all types of activity.
The Canadian Sport for Life movement promotes ongoing education and sensitization of federal, provincial/territorial, and municipal governments, the mass media, sport and recreation administrators, coaches, sport scientists, parents, and educators about the interlocking relationship between physical education, school sport, community recreation, lifelong physical activity, and high performance sport. Speed Skating Canada is a willing and able partner in this endeavour, building on our high performance success with a commitment to develop and implement world leading programs for participants in every stage of development in our relentless pursuit of excellence.
