The world junior short track championships are open for men and women aged between 14 and 18, on July 1 of the competition year. It is run under the same format as the world championships, men and women perform individual races in the 500 metres, 1,000 metres, 1,500 metres, and super 1,500 metres, and a four-person relay in the 3,000 metres for men and women.
Points are given for placings in the finals the individual distances, and only the top eight skaters who accumulate points in previous finals are eligible for the 1,500-metre final.
The athlete with the highest points after the points for all individual distances are added up is declared the men's or women's overall world junior short track champion.
