Just as he said he would, Denny Morrison (Fort St. John, B.C.) improved on yesterdays’ seventh place finish in the 1000m event, with a fifth place finish in the same distance today, Sunday at the Erfurt (Germany) Long track Speed Skating World Cup. The result also allows him to lay claim to the best Canadian result of the day at the competition.

One week after the jubilent crowds at the Richmond Olympic Oval, Canada’s long track speed skaters were back on the ice – this time in Erfurt, Germany. Canada’s speed skating team gives two local young skating groups a practice they won’t soon forget

It’s the dream practice for a young speed skater: to train alongside Olympic medallists. Two local clubs got to experience that today at Montreal’s Maurice Richard Arena, as club members from Longueuil and Saint Hyacinthe not only watched members of Canada’s Olympic speed skating team train, but also had the chance to skate with them.

Speed Skating Canada Wins Big at 37th Canadian Sport Awards

Speed Skating Canada (SSC) was well represented at yesterday's 37th Canadian Sport Awards, in Toronto. The awards were presented to the top athletes, leaders and sponsors for 2009. Christine Nesbitt (London, ON) was named Female Athlete of the Year, while Marianne St-Gelais (St-Félicien, QC) took the Junior Athlete of the Year title. Nesbitt, Kristina Groves (Ottawa, ON) and Brittany Schussler (Winnipeg, MB), members of the Team Pursuit, were named Partners of the Year and Intact Insurance received the Corporate Excellence Award, recognizing the outstanding support of the corporation for amateur sports. Charles Hamelin (Ste-Julie, QC) was also in nomination in the Male Athlete of the Year category, but the award went to snowboarder Jasey-Jay Anderson. [ ... Read more ]

Richmond (Sportcom) – Canada’s team pursuit men Denny Morrison (Fort St.John, B.C.), Lucas Makowsky (Regina, SK) and Mathieu Giroux (Pointe-aux-Trembles, QC) beat Team U.S.A’s Brian Hansen, Chad Hedrick and Jonathan Kuck, for the gold medal, Saturday in the final long track speed skating event at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. In the bronze medal final, Team Netherlands were the winners, besting Team Norway. Canada Earns Two Golds, One Bronze

Vancouver (Sportcom) – Canada skated to an impressive gold medal win in the men’s 5000m relay, Friday, during the last day of short track speed skating at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The relay medal is in addition to a pair of medals – a gold won by Charles Hamelin and a bronze won by François-Louis Tremblay - earlier in this evening in the 500m event. In total, the short track speed skating team has won five medals – three from tonight’s racing, as well as the women’s relay silver and Marianne St-Gelais’ silver in the 500m. Vancouver (Sportcom) – With the crowd chanting CA-NA-DA! in support of Team Canada’s women in their 3000m relay, it seemed as though the roof of Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum would lift off; Team Canada earned a silver medal. Team China won gold and the Team U.S.A. won bronze. Team Korea, though first to cross the line, were disqualified due to blocking. Richmond (Sportcom) – Clara Hughes completed her long track skating Olympic career, Wednesday, with bronze medal in the 5000m event. Hughes skated the 12.5 laps in a time of 6:55.73; Czech athlete and World Champion in title in the distance, Martina Sablikova (6:50.91) won Olympic gold, while Germany’s Stephanie Beckert (6:51.39) took the silver medal.  [ ... Richmond (Sportcom) – Kristina Groves added a silver medal to her collection at the women’s 1500m event, Sunday at the Richmond Olympic Oval in a time of 1:57.14. Last week, the athlete from Ottawa, Ontario, won a bronze medal in the 3000m event. Taking the gold was the Netherland’s Ireen Würst (1:56.89); Czech skater Martina Sablikova (1:57.96) took the bronze medal today, adding to her gold medal in the 3000m event.  [ ... Richmond, BC (Sportcom) – Matchless in the 1000m event since the beginning of the season, long track speed skater Christine Nesbitt had the weight of the world’s expectations and predictions on her shoulders when she took to the ice today at the Richmond Oval. Jamie Gregg lunges towards the finish during his 1st 500mRichmond, February 15, 2010 (Sportcom) – Jamie Gregg was the highest placed Canadian today in the men’s 500m event at the Richmond Olympic Oval, with an 8th place finish.  The Edmonton native had a combined time of 70.26 after two heats.  Jeremy Wotherspoon (70.282) finished in 9th place; Mike Ireland (70.63) 16th and Kyle Parrott (71.344) rounded out the Canadians in 21th. Kristina Groves Wins the Bronze in the 3000m

Canada won its first medal in long track speed skating, Sunday, as Kristina Groves  (Ottawa, ON) skated to a bronze medal in the 3000m event.  Groves skated the distance in a time of 4:04.84.  Czech skater Martina Sablikova, ranked second in the world in the distance, won gold in 4:02.53, while German Stephanie Beckert took silver in 4:04.62. Kristina Groves has just won a bronze medal in the Women's 3000m.  Gold went to Czech Republic skater Martina Sablikova, Stephanie Beckert of Germany took Silver.  Clara Hughes was 5th and Cindy Klassen 14th.  This is Canada’s first medal in Speed Skating at the 2010 Winter Olympics Games.  More to come…
