Tyler Derraugh Has Fun and Earns 17th Place

Long track speed skater Tyler Derraugh (Winnipeg, MB) finished in 17th place in the overall Men’s Classification in his first-ever World Sprint Championships, held in Obihiro Japan. Alberta’s Tamara Oudenaarden (St. Albert, AB) took 19th place in the final Ladies’ Classification.

Oudenaarden and Derraugh Top Canadians in Obihiro

Tamara Oudenaarden (St. Albert, AB) and Tyler Derraugh (Winnipeg, MB) were the highest ranking Canadians on the first day of the Long Track World Sprint Championships today, in Obihiro, Japan.

Oudenaarden is currently ranked 15th in the preliminary Ladies’ Classification after round one of the 500m and 1000m events, where she skated to 12th and 20th place finishes, respectively.

Olympic Oval Working Group Update

As you may know, Calgary's Olympic Oval has been encountering some financial challenges of late.  This past Fall, the President of the University of Calgary (UofC operates the Oval) hosted a meeting with WinSport (formerly CODA; the legacy funding body from the 1988 Olympics) and SSC, with the objective of coming up with a plan for speed skating use at the Oval for the next 20 years.  As one of our main roles in this exercise, SSC was called upon to work with the UofC staff to come up with a sustainable programming plan for the years ahead.  That process has recently started through the formation of a Working Group that represents all of the speed skating interests (ST and LT) at the Oval. Long Track Speed Skaters Nominated to Vancouver 2010 Canadian Olympic Team

At a press conference in Calgary, today, Speed Skating Canada (SSC) nominated 16 long track speed skaters to the Canadian Olympic Committee for participation in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. This nomination followed the Olympic Selection competition held at the Calgary Olympic Oval from December 27 to January 2nd.

Canada Takes 5 More Medals at World Junior Short Track Championships

Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu (Sherbrooke, QC) added three silver medals to his collection, today, at the World Junior Short Track Championships in Taipei, where he finished 2nd overall. Gélinas-Beaulieu first took silver in the 1000m, before finishing secondd of the Super 1500m and with his teammates in the relay. Laurie Marceau (Dolbeau-Mistassini, QC) added to the Canadian harvest with a bronze medal in the 1000m, followed by a third place finish with her relay team.

Two Medals for Canada in Taipei

Canadian junior short track speed skaters showed that they, too, could be dominant in the 500m when Mikhail Jeonghan Choi (Montreal, QC) and Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu (Sherbrooke, QC) took gold and silver respectively at the World Junior Championships in Taipei.

Throughout the day, the two Canadian skaters were never threatened, Gélinas-Beaulieu always led his races to cross the line first. “Everything went really well, I had great starts today, which helped me a lot as I was able to get ahead from the start. In all of my races, except in the final, I was able to start first and finish first,” said the 17 year old athlete.
