2004 ING Olympic Oval Finale

The Olympic Oval is proud to present the 2004 ING Olympic Oval Finale to wrap up another exciting speed skating season. Running from March 10 – 14, the Finale is an annual event with a reputation for fast times as athletes take one last shot at country and world records. Skaters of all ages and levels are also given the chance to achieve personal best times.

Celebrating our 14th anniversary of the Finale, there are sure to be many thrilling and suspenseful moments throughout the competition. The Finale has grown into an exciting five-day international competition with over 200 athletes taking over the Oval, with competitors from Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, the US and Germany.

Top athletes including Dutch professional team members from DSB and TVM, including four time World Champion Rintje Ritsma will compete at this year’s competition.

Justin Warselywicz (CAN) – 2004 Junior World Champion, 2004 Canada Post All Round Champion, holds three Canadian Junior Records

Brock Miron (CAN) – National Team member, 2003 Canadian Sprint Champion

Maki Tsuji (JPN) - 2nd in the 500m at the 2004 Junior World Championships

Robert Lehmann (GER) – 2nd overall at the 2004 Junior World Championships

Beorn Neijenhuis (NED) - 2002 Junior World Champion, originally from Rocky Mountain House

Ireen Wuust (NED) – 2nd overall at the 2004 Junior World Championships


At 10:00am on Friday, March 12th Dutch marathon skater Henk Angenent will attempt to break the 1 hour distance World Record at the Olympic Oval.

Men’s and Women’s All Around Long and All Round Short competitions will start on Wednesday, while Sprint competitions kick off on Saturday. Friday will also feature an electrifying 100m dash following the 1 our record attempt. On Sunday, the event finishes with the 100m finals, the IMV Projects SkateBot 2004 Robotics Competition and the Ceili’s Irish Pub & Restaurant Marathon event, which is a 100 lap (40 km) race.

Racing begins at 10:00am Wednesday through Friday, and at 9:00am on Saturday and Sunday. Racing times for particular athletes will also be available each day by calling Sharon at 403-220-5190 or Anne at 403-220-8158.
