Canada’s Top Junior Skaters descend on Richmond for a shot at the Worlds

Canada’s top Junior Speed Skaters will be at the Richmond Olympic Oval this weekend vying for one of four spots for the 2009 World Junior Championships, February 20th to 22nd in Zakopane, Poland.

Athletes to watch for in this weekend’s Canadian Junior Championships are Sarah Gregg (Edmonton, AB) and Véronique Huot (Saint-Hubert, QC) who both represented Canada at the 2008 World Junior Championships in Changchun, China.

The second of a series of three Canada Cups will be held in conjunction with the Canadian Junior Championships.

The Canada Cup #2 competition is one of six national long track competitions used by Speed Skating Canada to determine which athletes will be part of Canada’s National and Development Teams next season.

Top athletes to watch in this portion of the competition are Olympian Brock Miron (Cornwall, ON), National Team Member Nicole Garrido (Edmonton, AB) and current Development Team skaters Jordan Belchos (Toronto, ON), Kelsey Duffield (Red Deer, AB), Alexandre Garant (Québec, QC), Dustin Johnston (Moose Jaw, SK), Jeff Kitura (Langley, BC), Kirsti Lay (Medicine Hat, AB), Justine L’Heureux (Ste-Tite, QC), Mykola Makowsky (Regina, SK), Matt McLean (Winnipeg, MB), Peter Martel (Red Deer, AB), Philippe Riopel (Lachenaie, QC) and Shannon Sibold (Calgary, AB).

Admission to this event is $5 per day, children under 12 are free. Canada Cup #2 race results will be posted on the Speed Skating Canada website (http://www.speedskating.ca/National_results_LT.cfm) at the end of each race day.
