Canadian Junior Record at the Can Am Speed Skating Competition

The All Round Long and All Round Short events kicked-off today at the 15th annual Can Am long track speed skating competition. This event has grown into an exciting four-day international competition with over 200 athletes taking over the Olympic Oval. The 3000m event was thrilling as National Development team member Justin Warsylewicz skated a Canadian Junior Record. His time of 3:47.05 eclipsed the previous record by over 5 seconds. In addition, National Teammates Arne Dankers and Kerry Simpson performed well, both capturing firsts in the 3000m.

In the women’s All Round Short 1500m races, Simpson was first with a time of 1:58.90 and National Development Team member Chelsey Parker was second with a time of 2:02.66. American Margaret Crowley finished third with a 2:03.37. In the 500m distance, Dutch skater Andrea Nuyt finished first with a time of 39.39. Russia’s Svetlana Kaikan was second (39.42) and China’s Shuang Zhang was third (39.58).

In the men’s All Round Short 1500m, Oval Program skater Cailean Duggan (ON) was first with a time of 1:49.57, while fellow Oval skater Marcin Goszczynski (AB) was second (1:50.31). In the 500m distance, Russia’s Dmitry Lobkov skated a country record in 34.90. Dutch star Gerard vanVelde finished second with a time of 35.06, and teammate Alexander Oltrop was third (35.30). After the races, vanVelde said “the ice is very fast in Calgary. It takes some time to get used to it.”

National Development team skater Denny Morrison was second with a time of 37.22, while Oval Program member Mykola Makowsky (SK) was third (37.30).
