Canadian long track speed skating team ready for the World Junior Championships in Poland

The Canadian long track speed skating's eight junior national team members are ready for the World Junior Championships to be held Feb. 20-22 in Warsaw, Poland.

The team will be lead by Speed Skating Canada’s talent squad member Isabelle Weidemann (Ottawa, ON), with Alexandre Déry (Lévis, QC), Ben Donnelly (Ottawa, ON), Noémie Fiset (Quebec City, QC) and Juliette Wheler (Saskatoon, SK), who will all make their second consecutive appearances at this competition.

Christopher Fiola (Montréal, QC), Maddison Pearman (Ponoka, AB) and Alex Ruel-Garvey (Calgary, AB) will complete the Canadian team, which made its final preparation last weekend at the Junior World Cup Final held also in Warsaw.

Weidemann was the top Canadian at the Junior World Cup Final with a bronze medal in the 3000m event. The 19 year old was also fourth in the 1500m, as was Canada men's team pursuit trio of Donnelly, Déry and Fiola.

Fiset, 2015 Canadian junior champion, finished seventh in the 1000m and 13th in the 500m. Donnelly, 2015 men’s national champion, took the ninth spot in the 1500m.

The Canadian team will aim to win a first medal in this annual competition since 2012. In Obihiro, Japan, Laurent Dubreuil won the gold medal in the 1000m and the bronze medal in the 500m while clocking a new world record in this junior event with a time of 34.66 seconds. Kate Hanly also won the bronze medal in the 1000m event.

In 43 editions of the ISU World Junior Long Track Championships, Canada won 22 medals including five gold, eight silver and nine bronze.

Competition starts Friday, Feb. 20, with the 500m and 1500m events followed Saturday by the 1000m, team sprint, women’s 3000m and men’s 5000m events. The team pursuit and mass start events will end the competition Sunday, Feb. 22.
