Canadian team named for North American and Oceania regional qualifier

CALGARY
– Speed Skating Canada named today the team for the North American and Oceania regional qualifying competition for the World All-Round Championships in Norway. The qualifier, featuring Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand, is being held in Salt Lake City on Saturday, Jan. 12 and Sunday, Jan. 13.

The six-man and six-woman team will look to earn spots for Canada within the continental quota for the world championships in Hamar, Norway, on Feb. 15 and 16.

Ivanie Blondin of Ottawa, Kali Christ of Regina, Sarah Gregg of Edmonton, Lauren McGuire of Ottawa, Brittany Schussler of Winnipeg and Tori Spence of Kamloops, B.C, will represent the women.

On the men's side, the team will feature Toronto's Jordan Belchos, Nick Goplen of Kelowna, B.C., Alec Janssens of Chilliwack, B.C., Regina's Lucas Makowsky and Justin Warsylewicz, and Stefan Waples of Winnipeg.

All twelve skaters qualified for the Salt Lake City competition through the Canadian Single Distances Championships held this past weekend in Calgary. The team includes Canadian champions Brittany Schussler (3,000 metres), Jordan Belchos (10,000 metres) and Lucas Makowsky (5,000 metres).

Schussler also earned a silver medal in the 1,500 metres, Makowsky won bronze in the 1,500 metres and Belchos took silver in the 5,000 metres. Spence was the 5,000-metre silver medallist and McGuire took the bronze medal. Christ won the 1,000- and 1,500-metre bronze medals.

On Saturday in Salt Lake City, the distances will feature the men's and women's 500 metres, women's 3,000 and men's 5,000 metres. On Sunday, the men and women will compete in the 1,500 metres, as well as the women's 5,000- and men's 10,000-metre distances. Skaters are ranked over the combined results of the four distances.
