Clara Hughes Becomes Officer of the Order of Canada

In a ceremony held today at Rideau Hall, in Ottawa, six-time Olympic medallist Clara Hughes was made Officer of the Order of Canada. The Order of Canada was created in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, to recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. Since its creation, more than 5 000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.

Hughes was already a member of the order, but today, her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, confered her an even greater honour by making her an Officer. This is a way for Canada to recognize Clara Hughes' great athletic achievements, but most importantly her dedication to helping those in need, to inspire others and to help make the world a better place. Speed Skating Canada is proud of Clara's accomplishments, and wishes to congratulate her for her hard work and dedication through the years.
