BACKGROUNDER

Canadian Tire JumpStart/The Great Skate

• Launched in February 2005, Canadian Tire JumpStart is a charitable program created by the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families (registered charity number 13792 9451 RR0002) to help kids in financial need participate in organized sports and recreation. National in scope but local in its focus, Canadian Tire JumpStart helps kids in need get active by providing funds to help offset the cost of registration fees, equipment and transportation.

• Canadian Tire JumpStart Chapters are located in communities right across the country and are made up of community leaders from organizations such as Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, Canadian Parks and Recreation Association and YMCA Canada. Working together with Canadian Tire Associate Dealers and Petroleum Agents, the Chapter identifies children who would benefit from Canadian Tire JumpStart and ensures the effective delivery of the program. To date, there are 206 Chapters in communities across the country.

• Since the program was launched, Canadian Tire has helped give more than 24,000 kids a sporting chance and plans to help 30,000 kids in 2006.

• To help encourage families to get out and get active, Canadian Tire launched the first annual Great Skate event - a national event that took place on ice surfaces across the country in February 2004. With 75 organized events across the country and more than 32,000 participants, the Great Skate was one of the top three charitable events in Canada with respect to participation in the first year.

• In 2006, The Great Skate will take place on February 19th at more than 230 locations in communities across the country. For a list of locations or to register, skaters are asked to go online at www.canadiantire.ca/thegreatskate or call 1-877-616-6600.

Registrants will be invited to make a voluntary donation and Canadian Tire will match every donation, dollar for dollar, up to $500,000 with all proceeds going to Canadian Tire JumpStart to help give kids the chance to play.
