Decisive World Cup Events for Canadian Short Track Speed Skating Team

Montréal, November 6, 2013 – Torino (Italy) and Kolomna (Russia) are the last two events before the Olympics, but certainly not the least. The Canadian short track speed skating team will take part in the next stopovers on the Samsung World Cup Short Track Speed Skating circuit with one goal in mind: to qualify the maximum athletes entries for each distance at the Sochi Olympic Games.

A maximum of three athletes per country can qualify for each event. To guarantee their spots, the athletes must finish among the top 32 in the 500m and the 1000m and among the top 36 in the 1500m. In the men’s and women’s relay events, only the top 8 teams qualify for Sochi, with the Russian teams earning an automatic qualification as host country.

“Before the World Cup events, team members took part in a training camp at the Hungarian National Training Center in Budapest, which has been our home base for the last three years,” explained Yves Hamelin, Short Track Program Director “In addition to helping us adjust to the time change, it allows us to finalize the athletes’ preparation before they arrive on-site to compete. The athletes had a great training camp and felt right at home, given their familiarity with the surroundings. This camp is also a great opportunity to isolate the team so they can focus on their preparation, their next goals and strengthen the team spirit. In this regard, the camp was a success and all our goals were achieved.”

Marie-Ève Drolet will rejoin the team in Kolomna, Russia, next week. “The rehabilitation of her injury is complete and her fitness is coming along nicely. We are all looking forward to having her back in action. She’s the key to our women’s team”, shared Hamelin. “Now, she can fully benefit from the next three months of training and be completely ready.”
