Dutch international long track speed skater Ted-Jan Bloemen from Netherlands coming to skate for Canada

He will be arriving at the Calgary International Airport Tuesday, June 3, at 1:30 pm

Calgary, June 3, 2014 – Dutch long track speed skater Ted-Jan Bloemen, won took the third spots in the 5000m and 10000m events at the 2010 Essent International Skating Union World Allround Championships, will be arriving in Calgary Tuesday to train in Canada and ultimately represent the country in international competitions in the upcoming years leading up to the 2018 Olympic Games.

Bloemen, 27, was fourth overall at the 2010 Essent World Allround Speed Skating Championships. He has already applied for Canadian citizenship as his father is Canadian and lived here for the first few years of his life. The Bloemen’s still have relatives in Vancouver and Montreal.

Bloemen did not skate on the World Cup circuit or at the Olympics during the 2013-2014 season. He did post the eighth best 10000m time in the world last season with a 13:08.57 at a competition in Heerenveen, Netherlands on Dec. 28, 2013. His personal bests in both the 1000m (1:10.87) and 1500m (1:46.52) were both recorded during the Oval Finals in Calgary in March, 2009. His personal best of 6:17.07 on 5000m is also the best time in this distance in Canada.

Bloemen will now need to wait for his release from the International Skating Union to be able to compete for Canada, which can take some time. But this year for sure, he will be skating with the Canadian national team and training in Calgary. He is hopeful of being coached by current national team coach Bart Schouten, who is from The Netherlands and coaches Canada’s double medallist from the 2014 Winter Olympics, Denny Morrison.

“The reason I’m moving to Canada is that last season was really disappointing for me and I was looking for a new challenge to find joy in speed skating again”, said Bloemen. “Considering my family connections with Canada and the great facilities in Calgary, this switch seemed a great adventure to me. When I contacted Bart Schouten, he reacted very positive. That’s when I decided I should try to make this happen.”

“I’m very happy to see Ted-Jan Bloemen come to Canada and hopefully, to see him represent the country in international competitions”, Schouten said. “Basically, he is the fastest non-Dutch in the 10000m and he’s a great addition to the team pursuit.”
