Gregg and Nesbitt are 500-metre champions at Canadian Single Distance Championships

Spence and Derraugh win first-ever mass start Canadian titles

CALGARY – Edmonton’s Jamie Gregg and London’s Christine Nesbitt repeated this year as 500-metre champions at the 2012 Canadian Long Track Single Distance Championships at Calgary’s Olympic Oval. Winning the first ever mass start Canadian titles were Tori Spence, of Kamloops, B.C., for the women and Winnipeg’s Tyler Derraugh for the men.

Gregg, winning his second gold medal on the weekend, skated to combined 500-metre race times of 69.50 seconds (1st 500m: 34.69 - 2nd: 34.81) to take the gold medal. Montreal’s Muncef Ouardi was 0.32 seconds behind Gregg to capture the silver medal. His combined times were 69.82 seconds (34.98 - 34.84). Alex Boisvert-Lacroix, from Sherbrooke, Que., claimed the bronze medal finishing in a time of 70.09 seconds (35.10 - 34.99).

“I was happy with my races. They were two solid races,” said Gregg. “In the first one I put up a good time. And so the second (race) I tried a little bit too hard to go even faster and it ended up being slower. But I think I learned from it.”

Nesbitt won her fourth medal for the championships skating her two 500-metre races in a time of 75.88 seconds (37.99 - 37.88). Calgary’s Anastasia Bucsis was 0.82 seconds off the pace with a combined time of 76.70 seconds (38.32 - 38.38) to earn the silver medal. Taking the bronze medal was Danielle Wotherspoon, of Red Deer, Alta., with a time of 77.57 seconds (38.80 - 38.77).

“Those were good races. They’re the two fastest races I've skated this year, and only the third and fourth time I've ever skated under 38 seconds,” said noted Nesbitt. “So I'm pretty happy with that. I feel like there's still room for improvement.”

Lauren McGuire, of Ontario, and B.C.’s Ashley Nelson and Tori Spence took part in women’s mass start, which saw them race 15 laps. Spence took the gold medal in a time of 8:57.07, followed by McGuire (8:57.51) and Nelson (8:57.71). There were 14 skaters competing 20-lap men’s mass start. Derraugh won the gold medal (10:32.33), followed by Quebec skaters Philippe Riopel (10:33.15) and Leo Landry (10:33.45).

In Canada Cup grouping, Sara Hopkins, of Ontario, was first in the combined 500-metres races (82.41; 40.97 - 41.44). Quebec’s Meryem Labidi was second (82.58; 40.96 - 41.62), and Elyce Henry, of B.C., was third (83.19; 41.43 - 41.76). In the men’s 500 men’s, Ontario’s Martin Corbett was first with a total time of 72.51 seconds (36.52 - 35.99), followed by Quebec skaters Jean-Francois Garon in second (72.83; 36.53 - 36.30) and Samuel Descormiers in third (73.26; 36.60 - 36.66).

The SSC long track high performance will meet this evening to finalize the team selections for the ISU World Sprint Championships, the winter World Cups, the regional/continental qualifiers and the ISU World All Round Championships. A news release will follow this week.
