Ottawa, May 19, 2017 – Intact Insurance Company, Speed Skating Canada’s major sponsor, announced the eight Canadian speed skating clubs who shared this year’s Podium Tracker total amount of $45,000, including the winning club of the grand prize of $10,000, the Ottawa Pacers Speed Skating Club.

The seven winning clubs of $5,000 grants each are:
-Association régionale de patin de vitesse de Laval (Laval, QC)
-Humber Valley (Corner Brook, NL)
-Peace Wapiti (Grande Prairie, AB)
-Lloydminster Border Blades (Lloydminster, AB)
-Quinte Blades (Belleville, ON)
-Sardis Fliers (Chilliwack, B.C.)
-St. Lawrence Rapids (Brockville, ON)

The draw of the seven grants of $5,000 each as well as the announcement of the grand prize winner was made through a Facebook Live event on Thursday night, May 18, hosted by Short Track National Team members Marianne St-Gelais and Samuel Girard.

A total of 99 clubs submitted their applications for the $5,000 grants as well as the $10,000 grand prize.

While the seven $5,000 grants distribution was made through a draw, the selection of the winning club of the $10,000 grand prize was made by members of Speed Skating Canada’s committees, including Derrick MacLeod from the Sport Development Committee, Claire Loberg of the Competition Development Committee, and Mike Makowsky of the Officials Development Committee.

“After careful deliberation and review of 32 applications for the $10,000 grand prize, our selection committee choose the Ottawa Pacers Speed Skating Club as the successful recipient,” explained the selection committee member, Derrick MacLeod. “The Ottawa Pacers will be using the prize money towards continued maintenance and sustainability of the Brewer Park Oval which is one of a kind in Ontario and is diligently kept in place each season by a team of Ottawa volunteers. The Oval has been the training grounds of future Olympians as well as skaters taking to the ice for the first time. Congratulations to the Ottawa Pacers and thank you to Intact Insurance.”

"We'd like to congratulate the grant winners of this season's Podium Tracker program. We are overwhelmed with the number of quality applications received and believe this is a testament to the pride and passion Canadian clubs have for the sport. We eagerly await to see the positive impact the grants had on each club." mentioned by Robin Monniere, Vice President of Customer Experience & Brand Development at Intact Insurance.

The $45,000 donated by Intact this season represent the 45 individual medals, of a total of 64, won by Canadian skaters at Long Track and Short Track World Cups and World Senior Championships. For each of these individual medals, Intact Insurance is donating $1,000 to the Podium Tracker Program.

Launched during the 2010-2011 season, the Intact Insurance Podium Tracker Program has donated up to now a total of $330,000 to speed skating clubs across Canada.
“On behalf of the community and speed skating recipient clubs this season, I would like to thank Intact Insurance for this financial support, which will help winning clubs in their daily operations”, added Speed Skating Canada’s Chief Executive Officer, Susan Auch. “The Podium Tracker program is unique in the country and is a great illustration of the passion and involvement that Intact Insurance shows for our overall Canadian speed skating program.”
