SSC’s Intact Insurance Day on Skates spreads across the country

OTTAWA
– After a successful inaugural year in 2011-12, Speed Skating Canada’s (SSC) Intact Insurance Day on Skates, presented by Intact Insurance in cooperation with local speed skating clubs, returns with three events from Nova Scotia to Alberta.

The Intact Insurance Day on Skates is an opportunity for Canadians to get involved, experience and learn more about Canada’s oldest nationally organized sport – speed skating.

“The Intact Insurance Day on Skates is a fantastic opportunity for our local clubs to promote the sport and create excitement about speed skating,” said Ian Moss, SSC’s chief executive officer. “Providing the general public an opportunity to try out speed skating under a safe and supervised environment and coached by some of our best athletes and coaches, follows strongly to our core values. We hope that the public enjoys the experience.”

The first of three two-day events will be held in Montreal on Saturday, Feb. 2 and Sunday, Feb. 3, during the city’s popular Fêtes des Neiges festival at the Jean-Drapeau Park. The Intact Insurance Day on Skates then moves across the country to Edmonton. The City of Champions will welcome the event on Saturday, Feb. 16 and Sunday, Feb. 17, as part of the Silver Skate Festival at Hawrelak Park. The third event of the season will be at Halifax’s new Emera Oval on Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24.

SSC’s Intact Insurance Day on Skates offers two days of free events from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (times vary slightly for each city) for families and children. Activities in both cities will include speed skating clinics and open skating, with rental skates provided free of charge, demonstrations by local club athletes and opportunities to meet national team athletes and Olympians.
