Kali Christ finishes 10th at world allround championships

Kali Christ of Regina finished 10th overall at the season-ending ISU Essent World allround speedskating championships in Heerenveen, Netherlands, which wrapped up Sunday.

The 22-year-old registered an eighth-place skate Sunday in the 1500m in one minute, 58.36 seconds and remained in 10th place overall. The top eight skaters moved on to the finale, the 5000m. Ireen Wust of the Netherlands won her fourth straight title winning three of four races. The last woman to win all four was Canadian star Cindy Klassen in 2006.

The allround championships involve a cumulative point score for four events — the 500m, 1500m, 3000m and 5000m for the women, and 500m, 1500m, 5000m and 10000m for the men.

Ivanie Blondin of Ottawa was 17th in the 1500m and 18th overall, while Shannon Rempel of Winnipeg finished 18th in the 1500m and 19th overall.

Canada’s lone male competitor in Heerenveen, Jordan Belchos of Thornhill, Ont., was 23rd in the 1500m Sunday and 22nd overall. Koen Verweij of the Netherlands won the men’s allround title.
