More medals for Scholten & Rasmussen at 2003 Winter Universiade in Italy

After a Gold and Silver finish on Friday in the 500 meter race, the Short Track Speed Skating duo of Jeff Scholten (Fredericton, NB) and Daryl Rasmussen (Chilliwack, BC) were at it again on Saturday afternoon this time placing second and third respectively in the 1000 M event at the 2003 Winter Universiade in Italy.

China’s Ye Li won gold with a time of 1:28.756 with Scholten clocking a time of 1:28.912 while Rasmussen followed just behind in 1:29.147. These two medals bring Canada’s total in Men’s Short Track individual events (1500, 500, 1000 M) to five out of a possible nine (one gold, three silver, one bronze).

Silver medallist in the 1500 M, Collège Ahuntsic’s Marc-André Monette (Montreal, QC) was unfortunately disqualified for a second straight day, this time in the semis. He was in a group with Scholten, Li and Korea’s Ho-Jin Seo. University of Calgary’s Lahey (Ottawa, ON) was third of his group in his semis, behind Korea’s Jae Kyung Lee and Rasmussen.

In the Women’s 1000 M, Mount Royal College’s Kylee Toth (Vernon, BC) was Team Canada’s best performer with a semifinals finish. Unfortunately, she was disqualified while racing in a group composed of eventual gold medallist Xiaolei Cheng of China, eventual bronze medallist Hye-Kyung Kim of Korea, and Mile Zhu of China.

Cheng won her third gold medal in as many individual races in a time of 1:37.914, in front of Italy’s Marta Capurso (1:38.044) and Kim (1:38.128).

Other Canadian results were:

- Mélanie Gagnon, Collège Rosemont (St-Jerome, QC), quarterfinals (3rd of group)

- Anne Maltais, Université Laval (Quebec City, QC), quarterfinals (3rd of group)

- Raphaele Lemieux, Collège Maisonneuve (Rivière-du-Loup, QC), quarterfinals (disqualified)

Men’s 5000 M Relay (site: Piancavallo, Italy)

Unfortunately, the Men’s Short Track Speed Skating team suffered its first big disappointment of the Universiade when it was disqualified in the semifinals of the 5000 M Relay. Canada’s group was composed of China, Japan and the USA. China and Japan advanced to Sunday’s finals, as did Italy and Korea who were in the other group.

Here is the Canadian speed skating team’s schedule for Sunday, January 26:

- Men’s & Women’s 3000 M

- Women’s 3000 M Relay
