Nesbitt, Gregg and Belchos champions today at the Canadian Single Distance Speed Skating Championships

CALGARY – After winning the 3,000-metre title yesterday, London’s Christine Nesbitt was again the top skater in the 1,500 metres at the 2012 Canadian Long Track Single Distance Championships at Calgary’s Olympic Oval. Edmonton’s Jamie Gregg was Canada’s best 1,000-metre skater, and Jordan Belchos of Toronto was the 5,000-metre champion.

Nesbitt won the 1,500-metre race in a time of 1:55.03, beating Winnipeg’s Brittany Schussler (1:57.34) and Regina’s Kali Christ (1:58.01). Nesbitt also won the 1,500-metre crown in 2009 and 2011.

Gregg won his first 1,000-metre national title in a time of 1:08.43, edging out Denny Morrison (1:08.53), of Fort St. John, B.C., by 0.10 seconds, and Kyle Parrott (1:09.18) of Minnedosa, Man. Gregg took the bronze medal in 2011.

For his first 5,000-metre Canadian title, Belchos skated to victory in a time of 6:30.88. Winnipeg’s Stefan Waples won the silver medal (6:35.80), and Scott Bickerton, of Nelson, B.C., took the bronze (6:36.52). Belchos was fourth in 2011. MP3 audio from Belchos.

In Canada Cup grouping, Kyle Gendron, from Manitoba, was first (1:12.25) in the men’s 1,000-metre race. Jackson Hill, from Alberta, was second (1:12.54) and Quebec’s Samuel Descormiers was third (1:12.81). In the women’s 1,500-metre race, Ontario’s Sara Hopkins took top spot (2:05.17), followed by B.C. skaters Elyce Henry (2:05.26) and Allison Banwell (2:06.87). In the men’s 5,000 metres, Justin Maunder of Alberta was first (6:55.69), Ontario’s Connor McConvey took second place (6:57.94), and Jess Neufeld of Manitoba was third (6:59.95).

The Canadian championships and Canada Cup #2 continue tomorrow. On Saturday, the women will compete in the 1,000 and 5,000 metres, and the men in the 10,000 metres. On Sunday, the final day, the men and women will race two 500 metres and the mass start.
