Nesbitt, Klassen and Belchos champions today at the Canadian Single Distance Speed Skating Championships

CALGARY – Finishing just 0.69 seconds off the world record, London’s Christine Nesbitt crossed the finish line in 1:13.80 to win the 1,000 metres at the 2012 Canadian Long Track Single Distance Championships at Calgary’s Olympic Oval. Winnipeg’s Cindy Klassen captured the gold medal in the 5,000 metres in a time 7:08.42, while Toronto’s Jordan Belchos won gold the 10,000 metres in 13:32.33.

Having already won the 1,500- and 3,000-metre titles this week, Nesbitt recorded her best time of the season in the 1,000 metres almost beating Cindy Klassen’s record time of 1:13.11 set on March 25, 2006. Winnipeg’s Brittany Schussler won the silver medal in a time of 1:16.10 and Klassen took the bronze (1:16.56).

Canadian record holder in the 5,000 metres (6:48.97), today’s 5,000-metre victory was Klassen’s first national title this season. Edmonton’s Nicole Garrido won the silver medal (7:16.40) and Winnipeg’s Brittany Schussler was third for bronze (7:17.26).

In the 10,000-metre race, it was the same medallists as the 5,000 metres. Belchos, the 5,000-metre winner, claimed today’s 10,000-metre gold medal. Belchos was also 2011 champion. Scott Bickerton, of Nelson, B.C., won the silver medal (13:47.83), and Winnipeg’s Stefan Waples took the bronze (13:52.97).

In Canada Cup grouping, Josie Spence, from B.C., finished first in a time of 1:21.10 in the women’s 1,000 metres. B.C.’s Allison Banwell was second (1:22.00) and Anne-Marie Couture, from Quebec, was third (1:22.50). In the junior men’s 3,000 metres race, Quebec’s François Dery was first as crossing the finish line in 3:54.82. Daniel Dubreuil, also from Quebec, was second (4:00.53), and Connor McConvey, of Ontario, was third (4:01.53).

The Canadian championships and Canada Cup #2 wrap up tomorrow. On Sunday, the men and women will race two 500 metres and the mass start.
