Canadian short track team prepares for World Championships in Hungary

DEBRECEN, Hungary
- After completing the World Cup season one month ago in Germany, Canada’s short track team has been in Hungary since Sunday, Feb. 24, setting its sights on the World Short Track Championships in Debrecen from Friday, March 8 to Sunday, March 10.

At the world championships, three athletes each skate the 500-, 1,000- and 1,500-metre distances. A super final takes place in the 3,000 metres, featuring the top eight skaters in the overall ranking. The relay rounds will be skated over the three days.

Marianne St. Gelais, of St. Félicien, Que., Marie-Ève Drolet, of Laterrière, Que., and Valérie Maltais, of La Baie, Que., will compete in the three individual races. Jessica Hewitt, of Kamloops, B.C., and Gabrielle Waddell, of Red Deer, Alta., will be available as alternates and to participate in the relay.

The men taking part in the three individual races are Charles Hamelin, of Sainte-Julie, Que., Michael Gilday, of Yellowknife, and Olivier Jean, Lachenaie, Que. Guillaume Bastille, of Rivière-du-Loup, Que., and Charle Cournoyer, of Boucherville, Que., were serve as alternates and be available for the relay races.

Veteran Canadian official, Jacques Grégoire of Pointes-aux-Trembles, Que., has been appointed by the ISU to serve as the first assistant referee for the world championships.

Team Notes

  • Olivier Jean is the defending 500 m world champion and Valérie Maltais is the defending 3000 m champion. Guillaume Bastille, Charles Hamelin and Olivier Jean were part of the gold-medal winning relay team in 2012.
  • Hamelin will be competing in his 10th consecutive world championship.
  • In six World Cups this season, Canada won two women's gold medals, four silver and four bronze, and three men's gold, eight silver and six bronze.
