Selections will determine Canada’s long track team nominated for 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games – Intact Insurance 2014 Speed Skating Team Selections in Calgary Dec. 28-Jan. 3. –

The Road to Sochi goes through The Olympic Oval this week as Speed Skating Canada (SSC) hosts the Intact Insurance 2014 Speed Skating Team Selections on the fastest ice in the World from Dec. 28 to Jan. 3. The competition will determine the long-track speed skaters that SSC nominates to be named to the Canadian Team that competes at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. The Selections also act as the Canadian Single Distance Championships for the 2013-14 season.

Among the athletes scheduled to compete at the Intact Insurance 2014 Speed Skating Team Selections are 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic 1000m champion Christine Nesbitt of London, Ont., recent World Cup medallists Brittany Schussler of Winnipeg, Man., (bronze in 1500m in Astana, Kazakhstan, Nov. 30), Gilmore Junio of Calgary (gold in 500m in Salt Lake City, Utah, Nov. 15) and Jamie Gregg of Edmonton (two bronze in 500m in Calgary, Nov. 8, 10) along with Vancouver Olympians and gold medallists Denny Morrison of Fort St.John, BC, Lucas Makowsky of Regina, SK and Mathieu Giroux of Pointe-aux-Trembles, Quebec.

Following the Olympic Qualifying competitions (Essent ISU World Cups), the Canadian long-track Olympic team currently has the ability to send 18 athletes to the Games, with the athletes to be nominated by Speed Skating Canada’s Olympic Selection Committee following the Selections and announced publicly on Jan. 22 at Calgary’s Olympic Oval.

The final day of the Intact Insurance 2014 Team Selections and Canadian Single Distance Championships will overlap with the first day of racing for Canada Cup 2 which begins Friday, Jan. 3 at 9 a.m., involving men’s and women’s 500m and 1000m events and a junior men’s 3000m.
