Short Track Speed Skaters Win Big at the Gala Sports Québec

Short track speed skaters Marianne St-Gelais and Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu were both named Athlete of the Year - National level at the Gala Sports Québec held last night, in Montreal.

After winning the Maurice of Male athlete - Provincial level in 2008, Gélinas-Beaulieu of Sherbrooke once again took home a trophy this year. "Of course this is of a bigger level, but last year, I won for both short and long track. This year, it's for short track only, but that doesn't mean I gave up on long track. I'm hoping to qualify for both World Junior Championships this year," he said.

World Junior Champion in the 500m, Marianne St-Gelais felt honoured to win a Maurice. "I don't do my sport to go to galas and receive recognition, said the future Olympian. This award, it's a big reward for me. It's just to congratulate us, but it's nice to see that people follow us, that they know what we do."

Young skater Joakim Albert won the Maurice for the Male athlete - Provincial level for his achievemensin long and short track speed skating as well as cycling. Last season, Albert won four gold medals at the Canadian Age Class Long Track Championship, before winning five more at the Jeux du Québec in short track.
