Two Victories for Charles Hamelin in Day One

August 7th marked the opening of the Intact Insurance Short Tract Team Selections at the Maurice Richard arena in Montreal. There was a lot of nervous energy in the air at the beginning of this important step in the qualification process for the Olympic Games in Sochi next February. To break the ice, a 1500 m race and a 500 m race were contested.

1500 meters
On the women's side, three skaters from Saguenay, QC took the first three positions. Marie-Ève Drolet finished first, followed by Marianne St-Gelais, and Valerie Maltais.

On the men’s side, Charles Hamelin beat Guillaume Bastille (2nd) and his brother François Hamelin (3rd). In the final round, Michael Gilday and Charle Cournoyer crashed into the mats. After this fall, Michael went to the hospital to have x-rays taken. The results of these exams will be available later.

500 meters
The pace sped up for the 500 meter event. Skaters showed their metal in the final, which was won by Jessica Hewitt. Marianne St-Gelais fell when Valérie Maltais tried to pass her. As a result, Marie-Eve Drolet slipped into 2nd place, and Marianne finished 3rd due to the penalty imposed on Valérie.

The men’s event went furiously fast! In the final round, Charles Hamelin crossed the finish line first, while in the last few centimeters, Olivier Jean (2nd) beat veteran François-Louis Tremblay, who finished 3rd.

Note that athletes take part in each event three times. The best two results per event are kept. The next race day will be Saturday starting at 1:50 p.m. A 1000-meter and a 1500-meter race are scheduled to take place.
