Speed Skating Canada unveils its final roster for the fifth ISU World Cup Long Track of the season in Berlin, Germany

Berlin, Germany, January 24, 2017 – Speed Skating Canada announced its final line-up today, including events for each Canadian skater, for the fifth ISU World Cup Long Track Speed Skating of the season to be held this weekend, January 27-29, in Berlin, Germany.

Canada will be represented by four skaters in Berlin: Ivanie Blondin of Ottawa, ON, on the women’s side, and Ted-Jan Bloemen of Calgary, AB, Vincent De Haître of Cumberland, ON, and Laurent Dubreuil of Lévis, QC, on the men’s side.

On the women’s side, Ivanie Blondin will aim to add another medal to the four she won so far this season in World Cups. In Berlin, Blondin will take part in the first of two 1000m events scheduled this weekend, as well as in the 1500m and 3000m. She won a bronze medal in this last event at the first World Cup of the season in China.

On the men’s side, Laurent Dubreuil will take part in the two 500m and 1000m races. Vincent De Haître will skate in the first 500m race, in the two 1000m and in the 1500m races as well. In Kazakhstan earlier this season, De Haître won gold in the 1000m.

Bronze medalist in the 5000m in Kazakhstan, Ted-Jan Bloemen will look to be back on the podium in this event in Berlin this weekend. He will also take part in the 1500m.

In Berlin, Laurent Dubreuil will also look to qualify a second spot for Canada at the ISU World Sprint Championships, schedules February 25-26 at Calgary’s Olympic Oval. Vincent De Haître already have the first spot while the women will have one spot. Tickets for the event are now available at: www.speedsk8.ca.

The World Cup will start Friday with the first 500m and women’s 1000m events of the weekend and the men’s 1500m. Saturday, the second women’s 500m and first men’s 1000m, as well as lone women’s 1500m and men’s 5000m are scheduled while, Sunday, the second men’s 500m and women’s and men’s 1000m, as well as lone women’s 3000m will take place. 

Following the first four World Cups of the season, Canada won a total of ten medals.

Coach Bart Schouten will accompany the Canadian athletes.
