The BCSSA has lost a long-time member & friend in the passing this week of Maureen Kraus

Maureen and her husband Gene were the heart and soul of the Matsqui Blades club for many years during which time all 6 of their children competed at a high level. Their daughter Alanna went on to make the National Short Track Team representing Canada at the past two Olympics (Salt Lake and Torino).
She could not, however, watch her gifted kids choosing instead to pace the hallways while they competed.

Maureen was completely devoted to the sport of speed skating for more than 2 decades.

She was a volunteer secretary for the Association in the 80's long before we had a provincial office. In those days, she and then BCSSA President, Evelyn Glenn worked out of Evelyn's basement!

Maureen was the foremost Recorder in the province for many years. She Recorded in the days when all the work was done by hand - she was very good and very well respected. Maureen also looked after the provincial records for years. She was a meticulous statistician.

Locally she worked tirelessly at the club level - she was an advocate for the sport within her community, she was involved with every promotional or fund raising event the club took on working most Bingo events for the club. She was an administrator, a mentor and a friend and she was one extraordinary skate sharpener!

She will be greatly missed.
