Three members of the Nunavut Speed Skating Association were honored recently at the 2014 Nunavut Recreation and Sport Awards Dinner, held the weekend of Nov. 1-2.

Congratulations to Josée Tremblay as Official of the Year and Asini Wijesooriya as Female Athlete of the Year. Congratulations also to John Maurice, who received special recognition for his contribution to sports in Nunavut.

John Maurice is the voice and face of the Nunavut Speed Skating Association. He is and has been the only president of the association and is the longest serving branch president in Speed Skating Canada.

Maurice is not only the president of Nunavut Speed Skating Association but he has been part of the coaching and mission staff for more than 10 sets of Games including the Arctic Winter Games and Canada Winter Games.  His passion for speed skating is visible, along with how much he cares for the kids and athletes who come through the program.

Congratulations to John Maurice, Josée Tremblay and Asini Wijesooriya.
