World’s Elite Long-Track Skaters and Olympians to Converge at Essent ISU World Cup Speed Skating in Calgary, Nov. 8-10

Olympic Oval to Celebrate Clara Hughes with Wall of Champions Ceremony

Calgary, Nov. 6, 2013 – Speed Skating Canada’s long track speed skating team will meet the best in the world at the first World Cup of the season, leading toward the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Calgary’s Olympic Oval will play host to the Essent ISU World Cup Speed Skating from Friday, Nov. 8 to Sunday, Nov. 10. Fans will see just under 300 athletes from 29 nations on their journey towards Sochi.

The World Cup will feature distances of 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 3000m for women, 5000m for men, as well as team pursuit events. The Canadian team roster, listed below, features Canadian Olympic champions such as Christine Nesbitt, Denny Morrison, Lucas Makowsky and Mathieu Giroux; athletes making their World Cup debut such as Josie Spence, Marsha Hudey and Heather McLean; as well as an athlete who recently made the transition from short track to long track, Alexandre St-Jean. This mix, as well as many nations using this World Cup as part of their Olympic qualification, guarantees three days of intense action.

Speed Skating Canada and the Olympic Oval will also pay tribute to Canadian Olympic great and international humanitarian Clara Hughes, who will become the sixth athlete to be honoured on the Oval’s Wall of Champions at a induction ceremony at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Clara will be meeting fans and signing autographs immediately following the induction ceremony.

Tickets for both Saturday and Sunday of the Essent ISU World Cup Speed Skating are available online at http://www.speedsk8.ca/tickets.html and at the door. Prices range from $5 for youth (ages 6 to 15) to $30 for Premium Seating. Children ages 5 and under enter for free.
