ISU Biography

At age 5, François Hamelin was already skating on a lake beside his house when he saw speed skating in a book and asked his parents if he could try it.

The athlete from Sainte-Julie is from a family very at ease in skates. His brother, Charles, is a triple Olympic Short Track Speed Skating gold medalist, his father, Yves, has been the Short Track Speed Skating National Program High Performance Director, and his mother, Manon, is the cousin of the ex-NHLer, Michel Goulet.

His talent - and maybe his genetics, has taken him to two Olympic Games in 2010 and in 2014 in Sochi. His best moment so far in his career is still his gold medal in the Men's Team Relay event at home, in Vancouver, in 2010.

François Hamelin represented Canada at the Junior Short Track World Championships in 2005 and in 2006, where he won a silver medal in the Men's Team Relay event and a bronze medal in the 1000m.

He won his first medals in senior international competitions during the 2007-2008 season: bronze medals in the Men's Team Relay (World Cup #5) and 500m (World Cup #6). In the same season, he beat the Senior World Record in the 500m (41.066), a record that stood from October 13, 2007, to February 10, 2008.

His performances during that season gave him the Speed Skating Canada's 2008 Short Track Rising Star of the Year Award.

With his partners Michael Gilday, Charles Hamelin and Olivier Jean, he holds the Canadian Senior National record in the Men's Team Relay event since September 2012 (6:32.909).

In his free time, François Hamelin likes to share meals with friends, read and watch movies. He's studying accounting at the Université du Québec à Montréal.
