About the World Single Distances Championships
The world single distances championships, which began in 1996, is similar to the single distances format of the Olympic Games. The world single distances championships are held annually to crown a world champion for each individual distance. The distances competed at the these championships are the 500 metres, 1,000 metres, 1,500 metres, 3,000 metres (women only), 5,000 metres, 10,000 metres (men only) and team pursuit.
