Catriona Le May Doan Begins the Search For Canada’s Best Speed Skating Story

– Challenges Young Skaters Across Canada to Submit Video Entries For a Chance to Win Over $25,000 in Prizes –

Calgary, Alberta – Catriona Le May Doan joined members of the Canadian National Speed Skating Team at the World Cup in Calgary to officially launch Canada’s first ING Speed Skating Challenge.

“Canada is a great nation of speed skaters and we know that there are incredible stories happening everyday at rinks and ovals at community clubs across Canada. So we’ve begun the search for Canada’s best speed skating stories,” said Catriona. “Think of it as Canadian Idol – speed skating style.”

Speed Skating Canada’s Director General, Jean R. Dupré, shares Catriona’s enthusiasm about the growth of the sport in Canada especially at the grassroots community club level. He adds that it’s a great time to challenge young speed skaters to share their stories with the rest of the Country.

“Long track or short track, from Winnipeg to Quebec City, Calgary to Chicoutimi, or from the Maritimes to Richmond, I’d like to encourage all of Canada’s young speed skaters to tell Catriona their story,” said Dupré.

As Catriona sees it, The ING Speed Skating Challenge isn’t a competition to find the best young speed skater in Canada, more importantly, it’s about finding the best stories and experiences in speed skating that kids have to share.

“The ING Speed Skating Challenge isn’t about winning gold medals or getting on the podium,” added Catriona “It’s about why young skaters love the sport, the friendships and the good times on the ice, the feeling of new skates and accomplishing personal bests.”

The ING Speed Skating Challenge officially opens November 14, 2007 and the deadline for video entries is January 18, 2008.

The voting begins January 28, 2008.

A panel of judges, including Catriona Le May Doan and members of the Canadian National Team will select the top 16 entries and then the Country will vote online to determine who is Canada’s best speed skating story.

ING and Speed Skating Canada partners have provided over $25,000 in prizes for clubs and young skaters to add some additional motivation.

In 2006, ING Canada announced our Premier Partnership with Speed Skating Canada that involves a commitment of approximately $2 million over the next six years. With this support, we hope to help both elite athletes achieve their gold medal dreams, and to further grow this sport in communities across the country.

For ING, this partnership represents a great fit as it ties into our roots in the Netherlands, where the sport originated, and it complements other existing ING sponsorships in Canada, most notably with the Calgary Olympic Oval.

“ING in Canada is dedicated to high performance - for our customers, brokers, and employees,” said Derek Iles, President of ING Insurance Company of Canada. “By partnering with Speed Skating Canada, we hope to work together to highlight and build on the performances and achievements of Canada's speed skating champions and to bring the sport of speed skating to communities across the country, where our customers and brokers work and live.”

We‘re proud of our involvement in both ING On The Edge, a program that works with Speed Skating Canada to bring speed skating into elementary schools and provide young people with skating instruction, and the just launched ING Speed Skating Challenge – the search for Canada’s best speed skating story. As a national organization that operates in many of the communities across Canada, we are always looking for a way to give back to those communities and make a difference.
