Charles Hamelin Untouchable at Intact Insurance Short Track Team Selections

Charles Hamelin will be able to face the last two days of competition with less weight on his shoulders. By winning the 500m a second time, his fifth win in five races, he has earned a spot on the Canadian team that will be competing at World Cups, two of which are the Olympic Qualification competitions that will help determine the number of quota places for Canada at the Sochi Olympic Winter Games. Olympic Qualification competitions are World Cup #3 in Torino, Italy, and World Cup #4 in Kolomna, Russia. Hamelin is the first athlete to meet the selection criteria established by Speed Skating Canada.

The competition was fierce in this second racing of the 500m as athletes wanted to earn the maximum number of points for this distance. Charle Cournoyer stood out once again in his exciting final by finishing 2nd. Olivier Jean finished 3rd and Remi Beaulieu-Tinker 4th.

In women’s competition, Valérie Maltais crossed the finish line first in just over 44 seconds. She was closely followed by Marianne St-Gelais (2e). Officials are reviewing the tapes of Marie-Eve Drolet and Jessica Gregg’s crossing the finish line, in order to determine 3rd and 4th positions. This is the first major race for Gregg.

Michael Gilday, who fell during his first 1500m, did not race today and will not race on Thursday. He will be re-evaluated by the medical team this week.

Athletes compete three times in each of the three distances. Their two best results are counted. The next competition day is Thursday August 15 (see detailed schedule below).
