Speed skating, baseball and hockey take top officiating honours

– Sports Officials Canada (SOC) announced that speed skating official Sandra Chenard of Ottawa was the female winner of the 2012 FOX 40 Kitch MacPherson Award of Excellence. She was one of four winners announced today by the SOC for its annual awards.

Sports Officials Canada and Fox 40 International Inc. sponsor an annual national officiating awards program recognizing a male and a female technical official/judge who have made a significant contribution to officiating at the national and international level. The award, the "FOX 40 Kitch MacPherson Award of Excellence" is in honour of the late Kitch MacPherson of Hamilton, in recognition of his service as a basketball referee.

Chenard has served as a speed skating technical official for 27 years. She is Speed Skating Canada's most successful technical official, both domestically and internationally and is the only Canadian female official assigned to World Cup events.

Internationally Chenard has been assigned to five World Cups and two world team events. In 2010 Sandra was selected as a short track technical official for the Vancouver Olympic Games. Other international events included the 2003 World University Games and the North American Short Track Championships. Domestically she has served at countless national events in her role as competition steward and meet coordinator, including acting as the short track technical representative for the 2011 Canada Winter Games.

Throughout her officiating career, Chenard has contributed as a facilitator for the delivery of officiating clinics for recorders and meet coordinators at the local, provincial and national levels. She has also written or reviewed several training manuals for technical officials.

The other 2012 recipients are:

NHL referee Mick McGeough won the Ron Foxcroft Award for officiating excellence in professional sport. The Regina-native officiated his last NHL game in 2008 after a stellar 23 year career with the NHL.

The male honouree for the FOX 40 Kitch MacPherson Award of Excellence is baseball’s Corrie Davis from Edmonton. He has been a technical official in his chosen sport for 28 years.

Veteran baseball official Don Gilbert of Lasalle, Ont., will receive the Allen G. Rae Builder Award for his significant contribution to sports official's development and advancement. His involvement in his chosen sport covers a period in excess of 30 years, his impact on baseball umpiring nationally and internationally is immeasurable.

The awards will be presented on Sept. 22 at the Sports Officials Canada Annual Awards Dinner, being held in conjunction with their annual conference at the Delta Bessborough in Saskatoon.
