Excitement builds at day two of the 2003 CODA Winterfest Short Track Speed Skating Competition

The CODA Winterfest Short Track Competition at the Olympic Oval continued with strong competition during the 500m and relay events today. This competition is an exciting tune-up competition for the Canadian Open / Canadian Trials #2 scheduled for March 6-9, 2003 at the Oval where selections for the World Short Track Championships will be made.

It was an Oval sweep in the women’s 500m as first year National Team member Amanda Overland (ON) skated the event in 46.188 to finish with the fastest time of the day. Joanne MacLean (NS), who is celebrating her birthday today, finished with the second fastest time with 46.812. It was Jasmine Reeves (BC) who finished third with a time of 47.454. Olympic Bronze Medallist Alanna Kraus did not race today.

Another Oval Program sweep on the men’s side, as Daryl Rasumussen (BC) finished with the fastest time of the day – a 41.987. Joffrey Larocque (AB) finished with a 42.582 in the same heat to finish second overall. Fellow Albertan Tony Smith skated a 42.879 to finish third in today’s 500m pursuits.

The relays were full of thrills and spills! Teams included Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario/New Brunswick, Northwest Territories and New Zealand. Team ON/NB skated the fastest relay with a time of 4:14.521. BC was close behind (4:15.896) and the New Zealand team crossed the line in to grab third position.
