Halifax welcomes Speed Skating Canada’s Intact Insurance Day on Skates

- The third and final chapter Speed Skating Canada‘s (SSC) 2013 Intact Insurance Day on Skates will be held at Emera Oval Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24. The 2013 Intact Insurance Day on Skates launched in Montreal Feb. 2-3, followed by the second edition in Edmonton last weekend.

Located right in the heart of Halifax at the Emera Oval, guests will have an opportunity to skate with some of the best short and long track speed skaters in the world training from the national team training centre in Montreal and Quebec City. Additionally, Catriona Le May Doan, double Olympic gold medallist and speed skating ambassador, will be present to sign autographs.

The Intact Insurance Day on Skates is an opportunity for Canadians to get involved, experience and learn more about Canada’s oldest nationally organized sport - speed skating.

“We are pleased to be hosting our first Intact Insurance Day on Skates in Halifax,” said Alan Blair, senior vice president Intact Insurance (Atlantic Canada). “This event provides a great opportunity to highlight our partnership with Speed Skating Canada, as well as to showcase some long-standing and emerging speed skating talent. We are extremely proud to associate our brand with such fine Canadian talent.”

Featuring five 30-minute free clinics throughout the day starting at 11:30 a.m., you can sign-up to participate in a once in a lifetime opportunity while trying out speed skates for the first time. All participants will receive hands-on teaching from athletes and coaches, and learn the difference between speed skating and other ice sports.

Mathieu Giroux, Vancouver 2010 gold medalist, and national short track team member Sabrina Bourgela will be present to showcase their talents in the demonstrations, as well as assist during the clinics under the tutelage of SSC’s Todd Landon and Douglas Duncan.

There will be a World Cup Podium Tracker presentation on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Intact Insurance representative Moira Murphy along with Catriona Le May Doan and Troy Myers, president of Speed Skate Nova Scotia, will present the $1,000 check to Bev Ratchford, Travis Marinelli and Darlene Petites, representatives of the Northside Blades Speed Skating Club.

To register, please make your way to the Speed Skating Canada tent at the Emera Oval. All clinics will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis.
