Intact Insurance awards $11,000 to 11 speed skating clubs as part of the Podium Tracker program

Ottawa, December 7, 2015 – Intact Insurance Company, Speed Skating Canada’s major sponsor, announced today that the Barrie (Barrie, ON), Codiac Cyclones (Dieppe – Moncton – Riverview, N.B.), Fort Simpson (Fort Simpson, N.W.T.), Kamloops Long Blades (Kamloops, B.C.), Kelowna (Kelowna, B.C.), Kitchener-Waterloo Sertoma (Kitchener-Waterloo, ON), Medicine Hat Kinsmen (Medicine Hat, AB), Montréal-Gadbois (Montréal, Sud-Ouest borough, QC), Rapidos de Baie-Comeau, (Baie-Comeau, QC), and Winnipeg (Winnipeg, MB) Speed Skating Clubs, as well as the Centre régional courte piste - Laval (Laval, QC), were each awarded a $1,000 bursary as part of the 2015-2016 Podium Tracker program.

Last weekend, Canadian skaters won a total of 11 individual medals at the ISU World Cups, six in short track in Nagoya, Japan, and five in long track in Inzell, Germany.

In short track, Charles Hamelin and François Hamelin won gold medals while Marianne St-Gelais and Audrey Phaneuf won bronze medal, as also did François Hamelin, in the 500m events. St-Gelais also won a silver medal in the 1000m.

In long track, Gilmore Junio (gold), Alexandre St-Jean and Alex Boisvert-Lacroix (silver) and Heather McLean (bronze) all won medals in the 500m. Ivanie Blondin added a silver medal in the mass start event.

Canada also won bronze medals in men’s and women’s relay events in short track.

The Intact Podium Tracker Program tracks individual medals won by Canadian short and long track speed skaters in World Cups and World Championships. Each time an athlete steps onto the podium, Intact Insurance donates $1,000 to a local speed skating club in Canada.

So far this season, Intact Insurance Company gave a total of $36,000 in donation to 36 clubs, representing the 36 individual medals won by Canadians in World Cups and World Championships events.

Since the inception of the Intact Podium Tracker Program during the 2010-2011 season, Intact Insurance has donated a total of $215,000 to Canadian speed skating clubs.
