Junio wins silver medal in 500m at World Cup in Inzell, Germany

March 8, 2014 - Gilmore Junio of Calgary captured a silver medal in the men’s 500m Saturday at the ISU Essent World Cup in Inzell, Germany.

Gilmore’s time of 35.02 seconds was eclipsed only by a 34.96 from Ronald Mulder of the Netherlands.

"I'm really happy with the result from today, a bit surprised maybe but I felt I still had some good skating left in me after Olympics,” Junio said.

“It's nice to come here after the Games with that experience under my belt and use as a learning experience to improve my results internationally. I wanted to end the season strong and this is a good start."

It is the 23-year-old Junio’s second podium finish this season and third World Cup medal overall, all coming in the 500m. He won a race in Salt Lake City in November, 2013 and claimed a silver in Nagano, Japan in December, 2012.

There will be another 500m on Sunday in Inzell.

Junio gained worldwide attention at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia when he gave up his spot in the men’s 1000m race to teammate Denny Morrison, who went on to win a silver medal.

Morrison skated his first 1000m since the Olympics on Saturday and placed sixth in 1:09.30.
