Kristina Groves & Denny Morrison Dominate the 1000m Event in Calgary

Long track speed skaters Kristina Groves (Ottawa, ON) and Denny Morrison (Fort St. John, BC) stole the show in the 1000m event on Day 1 of the Autumn World Cup National Selections at the Calgary Oval.

In women’s racing, Ontario’s Kristina Groves won Thursday’s 1000m event with a time of 1:16.05. Groves bettered Britanny Schussler (Winnipeg, MB) and Shannon Rempel (Winnipeg, MB) who finished in 1:16.38 and 1:17.43, respectively.

Denny Morrison raced his 1000m event in a time of 1:08.46 – ahead of Alberta’s Jamie Gregg (1:08.66) and Quebec’s Philippe Riopel (1:09.13).

Five male and five female skaters are eligible to skate the 1000m distance in the upcoming Fall World Cup - but only three spots remain on the women’s team, as Kristina Groves and Christine Nesbitt (London, ON) were pre-qualified prior to the start of Canadian Selections.

Friday, skaters will undertake the 1500m event.

The Canadian Selections for the Fall World Cup come to a close Sunday. Team Canada will be announced by the Long Track Speed Skating High Performance Committee after they meet to finalise the selections next week.
