Over 500 skaters take part in virtual speed skating challenge presented by Intact Insurance

Virtual competition featured a variety of individual and team events between January and March

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – Over 500 speed skaters from ages 10 to 15 – representing 38 local clubs from 12 provinces and territories – participated in this winter’s Canadian Youth Challenge, presented by Intact Insurance, a set of virtual events in both long track and short track developed to engage the speed skating community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.  

Generously sponsored by Speed Skating Canada’s longstanding partner, Intact Insurance, the Canadian Youth Challenge was open to skaters of all abilities and featured a variety of individual and team challenges. Skaters completed the various events locally, with active support from their club coaches and teammates.

Those 500-plus participants submitted a total of 1,245 entries for individual distances, along with 154 entries into team events such as the Team Pursuit, Team Sprint and 2-Person Relay.

  • LT Individual Events: 100m, 300m, 500m
  • LT Team Events: Team Sprint, Team Pursuit
  • ST Individual Events: 1 lap flyer, 2 lap pursuit, 400m, 500m
  • ST Team Events: 2-person relay, Team Sprint

This inaugural virtual event provided skaters from across the country with an opportunity to compete against one another, this time for prizes and bragging rights! The more a skater participated, the better their chances were of winning a Speed Skating Canada prize package.

Since 2010, Intact Insurance has contributed a total of $380,000 to support grassroots speed skating initiatives across Canada through the former Podium Tracker program and current Club Excellence Award, which provides funding to clubs undertaking projects that help grow the sport in their communities. Nominations for this year’s Club Excellence Award are open and will be accepted until May 23.
