A dream come true

The photo of the week features Mélanie Gagnon (left) and Michaël Caya.

When Michaël was 3 years old, his parents took him to see his cousin, Mélanie Gagnon, compete in a speed skating competition. A few years later, Michaël began skating with the Gloucester Speed Skating Club to follow in his cousin's foot steps.

Last weekend, during the 2004 Canada Post Canadian Age Class Short Track Championship and the National Team Trials in Ottawa, Michaël (now 11) had the opportunity to skate in the same competition as his cousin.

Even though Michaël did not win any medals, he achieved personal bests in three distances while his cousin Mélanie was crowned champion at the short track speed skating national team trials.

This picture was taken during the competition, Michaël proudly wearing the Ontario Team jacket and Mélanie the National Team one.

What a great way to finish the season!

The “Photo of the Week” initiative seeks to promote speed skating grassroots activities and competitions. The speed skating photos can be of children or adults at play, during training, at competitions or even at a fund-raising event.

If your photo is selected you could win one of the following prizes: SSC vest, Louis Garneau helmet, a pair of Auclair national team racing gloves or a pair of Adidas sport glasses.

At the end of the season, all weekly winners will be automatically entered into a final draw for a Timex watch.

This initiative is reserved exclusively for Speed Skating Canada members.
