Roots cements relationship with Speed Skating Canada

Speed Skating Canada and Roots today announced a four year partnership that will see Roots provide merchandise and funding to support one of Canada’s premier amateur athletic organization. Roots will design an official licensed line of Speed Skating Canada merchandise, which will be worn as uniforms by the National team and available for fans to purchase. Roots stores across Canada will feature window displays and in-store materials to support Speed Skating athletes and programs.

Roots cofounder Michael Budman:

“After witnessing firsthand the success of Canadian Speed Skaters at the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympics, we knew that Roots had to get involved with the Sport at the grassroots level – from the 8 year old beginner to the 28 year old Elite Olympian. Our partnership with Speed Skating Canada will allow this.”

Roots and SSC have collaborated to design an Official team uniform for the National Speed Skating Team and the Development Team. The uniform will be proudly worn by the athletes, coaches, staff and officials. SSC is planning to make a line of casual Roots Athletics inspired by the team uniform available for sale to fans and the general public. All proceeds raised through the sale of merchandise, and the sponsorship value contributed by Roots goes directly to fund the athletes and programs of SSC.

Speed Skating Canada Director General, Jean R. Dupré:

"Speed Skating continues to be a powerhouse sport for Canada - over 50% of all Canadian medals during the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympics were generated by this sport. Just as our coaches and athletes will be excited about their new Roots look we are excited to bring with us on the podium a company that supports and shares our international success. We look forward to a long and prosperous partnership with Roots."

Speed Skating Canada, the sport's national governing body, continues a 115-year tradition to develop and promote speed skating across the country. SSC is composed of 13 branch associations and 140 clubs across all provinces and territories operating training programs for both short and long track speed skating. More than 8,500 Canadians train with SSC members, ranging from school aged children, elite Olympians to adult participants. Besides athletes, SSC trains and develops a large base of coaches and officials for the sport.

Roots cofounder Don Green:

“Like other Canadians, I was struck by the accomplishments of Gaétan Boucher in the 1980s. We know that Gaétan must have inspired many Olympians who are competing today. Roots wants to be a part of the excitement that inspires the next decade’s Olympians and we think this partnership with Speed Skating Canada is the right way to do it.”

The Roots multi-year agreement includes sponsorship funds and merchandise in kind to support SSC’s programs and athlete training. Also, a portion of the proceeds of the sale of any officially licensed Roots Speed Skating Canada merchandise (sold by Roots, SSC or a 3rd Party) will go directly to SSC.
