SPEED SKATING CANADA is seeking the services of a Sport Development Coordinator


Within the bounds of approved policy and the annual operating budget, the SDC provides leadership that supports the Officials and Competitions Development programs and services. The SDC ensures the application of sound business practices and ensures programs operate according to SSC policies and consistently deliver a high standard of Branch, club and member satisfaction.

The SDC is responsible for effective working relationships among Branch members and between the Branches and Officials Development and Competitions committees as well as all other agencies and individuals who impact the association’s ability to deliver programs and services in this area.

The association is the national governing body for speed skating in Canada and is responsible for the development of domestic and high performance programs in the sport. Its national office is located in Ottawa, Ontario. All staff are employed by SSC to facilitate the achievement of its long-term vision and in support of its’ core purpose. All personnel are required to operate within the policies as established by the association’s volunteer board of directors and are expected to act consistently with the association’s values.

The applicant should have the following experience/abilities:

- University education in Sports Administration or the equivalent

- Demonstrated experience in sport development activities and positions

- A record of excellence in planning and implementation of sport programs

- Strong interpersonal and external relation skills

- Facilitative leadership skills and an ability to work as a team member

- Strong written and verbal communication skills in both official languages

- Experience in working with volunteer organizations and an understanding of the national sport system would be strong assets.

The applicant will apply the aforementioned experience and skills in fulfilling the following:

- Works with the Chairs of the Officials Development Committee and the Competition Development Committee to prepare annual operating plans.

- Under the direction of the Sport Development Director, supports the implementation of organizational policies within sport development by assisting the Officials’ Development Committee and the Competition Development Committee to develop appropriate operating guidelines and regulations.

- Participates in, and supports strategic and long-term planning activities.

- Supports SSC-Branch planning in the area of sport development.

- Maintains a positive relationship with Sport Canada, CAC, the Canada Games Council and other domestic agencies and organizations that affect the association’s ability to implement sport development programs.


The position is based at SSC’s National Office in Ottawa. The anticipated start date is February 1st, 2003. Salary is commensurate with experience. The SSC is an equal opportunity employer. This position is partially funded by Sport Canada.
