Speed Skating Canada's Board Newsletter

The Speed Skating Canada’s Board of Directors held their first meetings since the June Annual General Meetings with a September conference call followed by a meeting in Montreal on September 19th to 21st.

Members of the Board of Directors are pleased to announce that Mr. Peter Waddell has joined the Speed Skating Canada executive family as Treasurer. Mr. Waddell, of Stratford, PEI, participated in his first meetings with the board in Montreal. He replaces Mr. Jack Nicholson who resigned last year.

Your Speed Skating Canada Board of Directors for the 2003-2004 season will be:

PRESIDENT: Brian Bunney

TREASURER: Peter Waddell

DIRECTORS: Lee McGreish, Peter Dankers, Marie-Claire Rouleau, Joyce Jackman, Daniel Gingras

The board reviewed and assessed the different workshops presented at the 2003 Annual General Meeting in Charlottetown in order to identify the strength and weaknesses for each. Feedback from the session will be applied to the 2004 AGM in Alberta.

The Board would like to acknowledge and thank the Committee Chairs for submitting their activity reports. The following committee chairs were elected by their committee members:

- Trudy Steele, Competition Development

- Gregg Planert, High Performance LT

- Tom Overend, High Performance ST

- Jeff Polakoff, Risk Management

- Jacques Grégoire, Official Development

- Kathy English, Club & Membership Development

- Dave Morrison, Coaching Development

The board reviewed each report and will formulate a response to the request and recommendations made by each committee.

As we come to the halfway mark of the fiscal year, the board is pleased to announce that all SSC committees have been working diligently to reach their stated objectives.

Each year the SSC board tries to meet with at least one committee to foster greater communication. This year the board met with the members of the Officials Development Committee in Montreal. In attendance for the meeting were Jacques Grégoire, Guy Chenard, Hans Terstappen, Ted Houghton and new committee member Laurie Murchison, representing the maritime region. We wish them a successful season and thank them for their work and involvement in the speed skating family.

During the September meeting the board met with the national and development team short track athletes based at the national training centre in Montreal. The meeting was very productive and informative as the board briefed the athletes on a number of related projects. The session also provided an opportunity for the athletes to ask questions of the board regarding certain projects.

In early October a second meeting took place with the national and development team long track athletes based in Calgary. The meeting took place during the ISU Short Track World Cup and addressed issues and concerns by the athletes.

The board would like to acknowledge and thank the many volunteers involved in the delivery of speed skating programs across the country. Without their dedication, determination and devotion our sport would not be experiencing the success it does.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all SSC members and their family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for your continued hard work.
