Up-and-Coming Speed Skaters in Calgary for Canadian Junior Short Track Championships

Athletes racing for a spot in January’s World Junior Championships on home ice in Montreal

CALGARY, ALBERTA – Sixty-four of Canada’s top junior short track speed skaters are in action at the Calgary Olympic Oval this weekend for the 2018 Canadian Junior Short Track Championships, presented by Intact Insurance.

The 32 male and 32 female skaters, all between 14 and 19 years of age, will vie for one of the four spots per gender available to represent their country at the ISU 2019 World Junior Short Track Championships, a unique opportunity to wear the maple leaf on home ice from January 25-27 in Montreal, Quebec.

Team members will be selected based on an athlete’s best two results in the 500m, 1000m and 1500m distances at the Canadian Junior Championships.

The competition starts on Friday at 11:40 am MST with the 1500m. The 500m will be raced on Saturday starting at 1:10 pm MST, followed by the 1000m and relay races on Sunday beginning at 9:40 am MST.

Rising stars to watch

Courtney Sarault of Moncton, NB will not participate in the event, as she was preselected to the World Junior Championships based on her results on the international stage so far this season. The 18-year-old will be the only athlete returning to the Canadian team from last year’s competition, where she won three medals and was second in the overall ranking.

Leading contenders for the remaining female spots include two members of the National Development Team - Léa Tessier and Léa Chamberland-Dostie - and the top two ranked skaters so far this season, Juliette Brindamour and Roxanne Beaudry, all from Quebec.

On the male side, Brendan Yamada of Alberta and Quebeckers Nicolas Perreault and William Dandjinou hold the highest rankings coming into the Championships. The remaining competitors in the field will look to surprise the top seeds to secure their spots on the team.
